Instruments as weapons

Perspective is everything.

If you view your mouth as merely a tool for communication, you will only speak when you have something to communicate. But if you view your mouth as a light, you’ll open it whenever you encounter darkness – as a tool for guidance and illumination of things once hidden. And if you understand your tongue to be a weapon, you will use it to fight against injustice.

What if the parts of your body were more than mere ‘parts.’

Romans 6 gives us a profound perspective on the ‘members’ of our body.

Before we dig into that, I just want to point out that the greek for ‘members’ means anything that protrudes from the torso of your body.

Yes, that includes your arms, legs, head, and intimate parts that protrude from your torso (men and women).

Romans 6 states:

12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

I just want to point out that the greek for ‘members’ means anything that protrudes from the torso of your body.

There is a second (alarming) perspective we get from the greek word for ‘instruments’.

Deadly instruments

The Holy Spirit, inspiring the hand of Paul who wrote Romans, is calling out to us to recognize that because we were crucified with Christ and are dead to sin (past tense!), we no longer have permission to let sin reign in our bodies. It’s not our decision – we have been bought with a price and are not our own (1 Cor 6:20).

So he urges us to stop presenting our members (arms, legs, head – eyes, mouth, ears, mind – penis, breasts) as instruments of wickedness, but rather for righteousness.

Guess what ‘instruments’ means?

Weapons.

Know your weapons

Your members were given to you as weapons. They are either advancing the kingdom of wickedness and evil as they fire and blast away the kingdom of God – or they are advancing the kingdom of righteousness by taking out the enemies strongholds! It is so much more than an instrument, it is a weapon.

Choosing to sin and engage in the very thing you were freed from by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is not merely a passive act of disobedience; it is an active assault against God’s kingdom! Your instruments are weapons and have power to destroy, defend, advance, and liberate.  Praise the Lord that we have been given tools in our own body because the grace of God empowers us to have victory over sin! “For sin, shall not be master over you (v.14).”

Which kingdom have you been using your member(s) to advance?
